چکیده

Let f : D → C be an analytic function on the unit disc which is in the Dirichlet class, so the Euclidean area of the image, counting multiplicity, is finite. The Euclidean length of a radial arc of hyperbolic length ρ is then o(ρ). In this note we consider the corresponding results when f maps into the unit disc with the hyperbolic metric or the Riemann sphere with the spherical metric. Similar but not identical results hold.

Euclidean and Hyperbolic Lengths of Images of Arcs

Let f be a function that is analytic in the unit disc. We give new estimates, and new proofs of existing estimates, of the Euclidean length of the image under f of a radial segment in the unit disc. Our methods are based on the hyperbolic geometry of plane domains, and we address some new questions that follow naturally from this approach.

2 00 4 Continuity of the Volume of Simplices in Classical Geometry

It is proved that the volume of spherical or hyperbolic simplices, when considered as a function of the dihedral angles, can be extended continuously to degenerated simplices. §1. Introduction 1.1. It is well known that the area of a spherical or a hyperbolic triangle can be expressed as an affine function of the inner angles by the Gauss-Bonnet formula. In particular, the area considered as a ...

Shortening all the simple closed geodesics on surfaces with boundary

We give a proof of an unpublished result of Thurston showing that given any hyperbolic metric on a surface of finite type with nonempty boundary, there exists another hyperbolic metric on the same surface for which the lengths of all simple closed geodesics have are shorter. Furthermore, we show that we can do the shortening in such a way that it is bounded below by a positive constant. This im...

Square Joints in Railway Track Waves

When rails are laid in a railway track, small gaps are left between the ends of adjoining rails to allow for the expansion of the rails when the temperature rises. Rail joints are provided to form a continuous rail path which are normally laid in standard lengths bolted together by fishplates. When two rail joints are exactly opposing each other, they are called square &#10&#10(side by side) jo...
